Sobering Statistics on Car Accidents: What You Need to Know to Stay Safe

Driving can be a dangerous activity and the most recent car accident statistics prove that point in a sobering way. The most recently collected statistics about car accidents in the United States show that drivers in this state are facing a record year for accidents. We can and should all drive a little safer and in today’s blog, we show you why.

Maryland car accident statistics are sobering.

Sobering Statistics on Car Accidents: What You Need to Know to Stay Safe

Fatal accidents are on the rise

In the first half of this year, around 19,000 people died in a car accident in Maryland. This is 14% higher than at the same time last year. Many people attribute this rise to the fact that gas prices are significantly lower than they were last year, encouraging more people to get behind the wheel. The more people driving, the more accidents there are bound to be.

Cars are more dangerous for children than guns

While there has been much debate over gun safety in this country, the sad truth is that children are far more likely to be injured or die in a car accident than by guns. Around 115 people die in a vehicle accident every single day in the United States. There are approximately 20,000 deaths in children between the ages of 1-19: car accidents account for 37% of the total while guns were only responsible for 27% of the deaths. If you are worried about your child’s safety, it’s wise to practice cautious and safe driving practices.

Vehicle speed has a huge impact

The greatest predictor of whether a person will die in a crash is the vehicle’s speed. Low-speed crashes greatly reduce the extent of injuries as well as the likelihood of a fatality. So always remember to obey posted speed limits and wear your seatbelt at all times!
